Labrang Monastery, Xiahe, GansuAmdo in the Tibet and Chinese borderland, Amdo is located in the northeast corner of the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai, northern Sichuan and southwest Gansu provinces. Amdo is home to over 1.5 million Tibetans. Many families in Amdo are farmers who take advantage of the fertile soil in the area. Western Amdo is mostly nomadic with people herding yaks and sheep. Many Magnificent monasteries and sacred mountains. Is one of the three traditional provinces of Tibet, the other two being Ü-Tsang and Kham; it is also the birth place of His Holiness Tenzin gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama. Amdo encompasses a large area from the Machu River (Yellow River) to the Drichu River (Rangtse). While culturally and ethnicall a Tibetan area, Amdo has been administered by a series of local rulers in recent centuries. Amdo has been annexed into Gansu, Sichuan and Qinghai.

Lady from AmdoAmdo was and it the home of many important Tibetan Buddhist monks (or Lamas), scholars who had a major influence on both politics and religious development to Tibet like the H.H14th Dalai Lama, the 10th Panchen Lama, and the great reformer Je Tsongkhapa. It was traditionally a place of great learning and scholarship and contains many great monasteries including Kumbum Jampa ling near Xining, Labrang Tashi Khyil south of Lanzhou.
